The Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% on Friday, September 18, marking its second rate increase in three months and pushing borrowing costs to their highest level in 31 years.
The BOJ’s decision reflects growing concerns that inflation could remain above its 2% target, particularly as higher import and energy costs continue to put pressure on the Japanese economy. The move also comes amid persistent weakness in the Japanese yen.
Despite the rate hike, the Japanese yen weakened against the US Dollar, with USD/JPY rising to around 156.70 from 156.20. The reaction highlights the importance of the interest-rate gap between Japan and the United States, which remains significant even after the BOJ’s latest move.
Bitcoin initially dipped to around $76,200 overnight before recovering following the BOJ announcement. BTC/USD climbed to approximately $77,400, extending its rebound.
The BTC/JPY pair on Japan-based bitFlyer also moved higher, gaining around 0.5% to JPY 12.06 million.
The positive Bitcoin reaction suggests that markets were not treating the BOJ’s move as an immediate trigger for a major risk-off event. However, cryptocurrency traders remain sensitive to further changes in Japanese monetary policy because of the potential impact on global liquidity.
Why the Yen Still Matters for Global Markets
Japan’s prolonged period of ultra-low interest rates has made the yen an important funding currency for global investors.
The yen carry trade involves borrowing in relatively cheap yen and investing the funds in assets offering higher potential returns. When Japanese rates rise or the yen strengthens sharply, traders may unwind these positions, potentially creating volatility across equities, currencies and cryptocurrencies.
For now, however, Japan’s 1.25% policy rate remains well below the Federal Reserve’s 3.75%-4.00% target range. That sizeable yield differential may continue to support yen-funded investment strategies, although the gap could narrow if the BOJ continues tightening while US rates remain stable or decline.
Friday’s BOJ rate decision is important for traders because it connects Japanese monetary policy with global liquidity, currency movements and risk-asset positioning. The immediate rise in Bitcoin above $77,000 shows that the BOJ hike did not automatically trigger a broad risk-off reaction, but traders should continue watching USD/JPY, US Treasury yields, Fed expectations and Bitcoin’s reaction to changing liquidity conditions. Any acceleration in BOJ tightening or a sharp move in the yen could increase volatility across crypto, equities and FX markets.
