DXY Nears Three-Month Low

The US Dollar Index (DXY) remains under pressure near a three-month low on Friday, August 21, extending its weekly decline as investors reassess the outlook for US monetary policy and the country’s fiscal position.

The dollar weakened despite elevated Treasury yields, highlighting growing concerns that higher borrowing costs alone may no longer be enough to support the Greenback. The DXY was around 98.75 on Friday, down roughly 0.1% on the day.

Softer US inflation and weaker economic signals have prompted traders to reduce expectations for an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. Market expectations now point to the next potential increase being pushed further into 2027, according to recent market pricing.

That shift is weighing on the dollar because expectations for higher interest rates typically increase the appeal of US assets. With traders becoming less confident about near-term tightening, the Greenback has lost an important source of support.

Another major factor is the US Treasury’s decision to expand its purchases of longer-dated government debt. The move is intended to ease pressure in the long-term bond market, but investors have questioned whether it can address deeper concerns surrounding US fiscal conditions.

The dollar has weakened as markets remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the measures, while US government debt has surpassed $40 trillion. Reuters reported that the DXY fell toward a three-month low as investors reacted to the Treasury announcement.

Dollar Weakness Boosts Assets

The weaker dollar is already influencing broader markets. The euro and sterling have gained against the Greenback, while gold has risen sharply as investors diversify away from dollar exposure. Reuters reported that gold gained more than 3% during the week as the dollar weakened.

For currency markets, continued dollar weakness could keep pressure on USD pairs while supporting currencies such as the euro and pound. At the same time, any renewed inflation shock or escalation in geopolitical tensions could quickly change the direction of the trade.

The DXY is a key barometer for global markets because the dollar influences major currency pairs, gold, commodities and global risk appetite. Its decline toward a three-month low signals that traders are increasingly questioning the dollar’s traditional sources of support, particularly US rate expectations and fiscal credibility.

For traders, the key signals to watch are Fed rate expectations, US Treasury yields, oil prices and developments in US-Iran tensions. A further deterioration in the dollar outlook could benefit EUR/USD, GBP/USD and gold, while a renewed rise in inflation expectations could bring buyers back into the Greenback.
