U.S. Futures Pause After 3-Day Slide

U.S. stock futures were little changed early Wednesday, September 2, as investors turned cautious after Wall Street suffered its third consecutive losing session.

Dow Jones futures edged up about 0.1%, while S&P 500 futures were nearly flat and Nasdaq 100 futures slipped slightly. The muted moves suggest traders are waiting for fresh economic signals before taking stronger positions.

Wall Street closed lower on Tuesday, with the Dow falling more than 400 points, the S&P 500 losing around 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite declining roughly 1%. Technology stocks led the decline as investors continued to reassess equity valuations amid elevated Treasury yields.

The August ADP private payrolls report will be a key market catalyst Wednesday, offering fresh clues about the strength of the U.S. labor market ahead of the official jobs report.

Jobs Data and Fed Signals in Focus

Investors will also study the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book for signs of changes in economic activity, employment, wages and inflation. Stronger-than-expected data could reinforce expectations for interest rates to remain elevated, while weaker figures could support the case for future rate cuts.

Treasury yields remain a major influence on equities. The U.S. 10-year yield recently reached its highest level since early 2025, increasing pressure on stock valuations. Higher yields raise the discount rate applied to future earnings and can weigh particularly heavily on growth and technology stocks.

The weakness was also visible across Asian markets. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 2.80%, South Korea’s Kospi dropped 3.59%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 declined 1.17%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.96%, and China’s CSI 300 lost 1.25%.

Corporate earnings will provide another potential source of volatility, with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Snowflake and Broadcom scheduled to report after the closing bell.

Wednesday’s market setup is important because equities are entering the session after three straight declines while investors await potentially market-moving U.S. economic data.

For traders, the key question is whether incoming data will strengthen or weaken expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts. A softer labor-market reading could support stocks by lowering rate expectations, while stronger data could push Treasury yields higher and extend pressure on risk assets.

The reaction in the S&P 500, Nasdaq, Treasury yields and U.S. dollar may therefore be more important than the relatively quiet futures session itself. With positioning already cautious, a surprise in the economic data could quickly trigger a larger move in either direction.
