US Futures Rise as SpaceX Jumps 8%

U.S. stock futures traded higher on Wednesday, October 21, as investors assessed corporate earnings and developments surrounding major companies, including SpaceX and Tesla. S&P 500 futures rose 0.29%, while Nasdaq-100 futures gained 0.7%. Dow futures remained flat, reflecting a cautious but positive outlook ahead of further earnings releases.

Asian markets showed a mixed performance. South Korea’s Kospi rebounded 2.7% after Tuesday’s losses, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index slipped 0.35%, and mainland Chinese stocks were broadly flat. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 also traded little changed.

SpaceX shares surged 8% after the company reported 161% year-over-year revenue growth in the third quarter. Elon Musk also revealed that SpaceX and Tesla had established special committees to discuss a potential merger. Tesla shares rose 1% in early trading.

The development put renewed attention on Musk’s business empire, while investors assessed the potential implications of a merger for both companies. However, the discussions do not guarantee that a deal will be completed.

Goldman Sachs Research has suggested that earnings growth could support equities through the end of the year, although risks remain from artificial intelligence-related concerns, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the U.S. midterm elections.

AI Investment Risks Remain in Focus

Investors continue to question whether spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure can generate sufficient returns, particularly as some projects rely heavily on debt financing. These concerns have contributed to uncertainty surrounding technology stocks and the broader AI investment theme.

Meta Platforms is scheduled to report earnings after Wednesday’s closing bell. Investors will pay close attention to its AI strategy, infrastructure spending and the commercial potential of its latest AI model, Muse Wonder, which is available to paying users. Beyond Meta, traders are preparing for earnings reports from Tesla, IBM and Southwest Airlines on Wednesday. Their results and management commentary could provide additional insight into consumer demand, corporate investment and the outlook for business growth.

This is important for traders because it highlights the key drivers of short-term market direction: corporate earnings, AI investment expectations and developments involving major technology companies. Rising Nasdaq-100 futures suggest stronger early sentiment toward growth stocks, while SpaceX’s rally and the proposed merger discussions with Tesla could influence trading activity in related shares.

Traders should monitor earnings results, forward guidance and management commentary from Meta, Tesla and IBM for potential volatility across equities. At the same time, uncertainty surrounding AI spending, geopolitical tensions and oil prices could trigger reversals, making risk management and confirmation from price action particularly important.
