Tesla Falls Despite Q2 Beat

Tesla Inc. ($TSLA) shares stabilized near the $320 level on Friday, July 24, after plunging 14% in the previous trading session following the company’s second-quarter earnings release. While the electric vehicle maker delivered stronger-than-expected revenue, weaker profitability and rising investment costs overshadowed the positive sales figures, prompting investors to reassess the company’s near-term outlook.

Tesla reported second-quarter revenue of $28.24 billion, exceeding market expectations, while global vehicle deliveries reached a record 480,126 units. Despite the strong sales performance, adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.33, missing analysts’ forecast of $0.50.

The earnings miss reflected mounting pressure on profitability as aggressive vehicle discounts and subsidized financing offers continued to support demand at the expense of margins. As a result, Tesla’s operating margin narrowed to just 1.4%, underscoring the growing cost of maintaining market share in an increasingly competitive EV industry.

Former Tesla president Jon McNeill has noted that while lower prices can stimulate vehicle sales, they can also significantly reduce profitability over time.

SpaceX Gain Masks Core Tesla Slump

Investors also focused on a $1.005 billion unrealized gain linked to Tesla’s equity stake in SpaceX. Although the accounting gain boosted reported GAAP earnings, it did not reflect improvements in Tesla’s core automotive operations.

At the same time, regulatory credit revenue fell 67% to $146 million, reducing one of Tesla’s traditionally high-margin income sources.

The company also accelerated spending on future growth initiatives. Capital expenditures surged 142% to $5.79 billion as Tesla expanded investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and autonomous driving technology.

The increased spending pushed free cash flow into negative territory at -$1.09 billion, raising concerns about how quickly these investments can deliver meaningful financial returns.

Tesla’s latest earnings demonstrate why investors should evaluate more than headline revenue figures during earnings season.

Revenue growth alone is not always enough to support higher valuations when earnings and operating margins are deteriorating. Markets often react positively to strong sales initially, but sentiment can quickly reverse as investors examine the quality of those earnings.

Traders should also distinguish between recurring operating performance and one-time accounting gains. Large unrealized investment gains may temporarily strengthen reported results without improving the company’s core business.

Finally, rising capital expenditures combined with negative free cash flow can signal increasing execution risk. Monitoring whether Tesla’s AI and autonomous driving investments eventually generate sustainable cash flow will remain an important factor in assessing the stock’s long-term valuation.
