Oil Nears $100 as Stocks Pause

U.S. stock futures were little changed early Wednesday, September 9, after Wall Street ended the previous session lower, as traders weighed a renewed surge in oil prices and its potential impact on inflation, interest rates and economic growth.

Dow Jones futures slipped around 33 points, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were broadly flat. The cautious tone comes after a weaker session for major U.S. indexes, with investors becoming increasingly focused on macroeconomic risks as the flow of corporate earnings news slows.

The three major U.S. indexes all finished lower on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.2%, its sharpest decline in nearly three weeks, while the S&P 500 lost 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.3%.

A key factor behind the move was the continued rise in crude oil prices. U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures climbed 1.75% to around $94.66 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 1.55% to approximately $99.44.

Brent moving closer to the psychologically important $100 level is significant because sustained increases in energy prices can quickly feed into transportation, production and consumer costs. That could make the inflation outlook more challenging for central banks.

U.S.-Iran Tensions Add to Energy Risk

The latest oil rally has been fueled in part by escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, raising concerns that disruptions in the Middle East could further tighten global energy supplies. A prolonged energy shock could increase inflation expectations while putting additional pressure on economic growth.

Rising crude prices also pushed the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly above 4.8% on Tuesday as investors reassessed the inflation outlook. This creates a potentially important chain reaction: higher oil prices → stronger inflation concerns → higher bond yields → tighter financial conditions → pressure on equities.

Wednesday’s calendar is relatively light, with no major U.S. economic releases or large corporate earnings reports scheduled. Attention is therefore likely to shift toward inflation data later in the week, which could provide clues about the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision.

For traders, the key is to watch the interaction between Brent crude, the 10-year Treasury yield, the U.S. dollar and major equity indexes. A sustained move in Brent above $100 could strengthen inflation concerns and reduce expectations for aggressive monetary easing, while stabilizing oil prices and easing yields could give equities more room to recover.
