BoJ Holds Rates, Yen Weakens

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) kept its benchmark short-term interest rate unchanged at 1.00% on Friday, July 31, in line with market expectations after concluding its two-day monetary policy meeting. Although policymakers paused after June’s rate increase, the central bank maintained a tightening bias, indicating that additional rate hikes remain possible if inflation and economic conditions continue to evolve as expected.

The decision was approved by an 8-1 majority, with board member Hajime Takata voting in favor of raising the policy rate to 1.25%. However, the proposal failed to secure enough support, reflecting the BoJ’s cautious approach as it evaluates both domestic and global economic developments before taking further action.

The BoJ stated that underlying inflation is steadily moving closer to its 2% target while financial conditions remain accommodative. Policymakers reiterated that future interest rate decisions will depend on incoming economic data, inflation trends, and broader financial conditions.

The central bank raised its core CPI forecast for fiscal 2027 to 2.4% while maintaining its fiscal 2028 projection at 2.0%. It also revised its real GDP forecasts slightly higher for fiscal 2026 and 2027, reflecting expectations of resilient domestic demand, improving exports, and continued business investment.

According to the BoJ, Japan’s economy is expected to continue expanding at a moderate pace, supported by rising wages and stronger corporate spending. Policymakers also expect the positive wage-price cycle to continue, helping inflation remain close to the central bank’s long-term target.

Despite the improved outlook, the BoJ warned that inflation risks remain tilted to the upside. Policymakers highlighted that the depreciation of the Japanese yen has significantly increased import costs, particularly for energy, raw materials, and durable goods.

Japanese Yen Weakens

The Japanese yen came under pressure following the BoJ’s decision to leave interest rates unchanged. Investors interpreted the policy pause as less aggressive than some had anticipated, despite the central bank maintaining a clear tightening bias.

Following the announcement, USD/JPY rose to around 160.80 as traders reduced expectations of an immediate rate increase. Market participants will now closely monitor Governor Kazuo Ueda’s remarks for additional guidance on the timing of the BoJ’s next policy move.

The BoJ’s policy decisions remain a major driver of volatility across global financial markets. Any indication that the central bank is preparing another interest rate increase could strengthen the Japanese yen and trigger significant moves in USD/JPY and other yen currency pairs. The BoJ’s outlook also influences global bond yields, equity market sentiment, and safe-haven assets such as gold, making its policy guidance an important event for traders seeking opportunities across forex, commodities, and broader financial markets.
