The US dollar rose on Monday after the US president threatened to impose new tariffs on metal imports, boosting demand for safe-haven assets, while the euro lost ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dollar index<\/a>, which tracks the US currency against a basket of six other currencies<\/a>, was trading 0.2% higher at 108.140.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dollar Gains Ground on Trade War Fears<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Concerns over a possible global trade war intensified on Monday after President Trump announced new 25% tariffs<\/strong> on all aluminum and steel imports to the United States, set to take effect later that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US president also stated that he would impose reciprocal tariffs<\/strong> on major trading partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump initiated a trade war the previous week, first imposing tariffs on both Canada and Mexico before suspending them, while maintaining tariffs on Chinese products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China\u2019s retaliatory tariffs on US goods are set to take effect later in the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abNeedless to say, the great uncertainty<\/strong> surrounding the nature, timing, and magnitude of these tariffs is likely to keep the dollar supported this week,\u00bb ING analysts wrote in a note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abThe main threat<\/strong> to long dollar positions could be a reassessment of the European outlook if expectations of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine<\/strong> increase later this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, at the moment, we doubt that investors will reduce their overweight positions in the dollar<\/strong>, and we could see the DXY approaching the top of its 108-109 trading range<\/strong> at the start of the week.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Trump\u2019s trade policies, investors will focus on US inflation data<\/strong>, scheduled for release on Wednesday<\/strong>, as well as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell\u2019s testimony<\/strong> before the House of Representatives<\/strong> on both Tuesday and Wednesday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euro and Pound Lose Ground<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Europe, the EUR\/USD pair<\/strong> fell 0.1% to 1.0316<\/strong>, slightly above the more than two-year low<\/strong> it reached the previous week, as investors braced for the tariffs Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose on Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abIt is possible that it will drop to 1.0225<\/strong> if ‘reciprocal’ tariffs affect the EU or some major European countries. Additionally, Wednesday\u2019s US CPI release<\/strong> poses another downside risk for EUR\/USD,\u00bb ING analysts noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GBP\/USD pair<\/strong> also declined 0.1% to 1.2397<\/strong>, following the Bank of England\u2019s<\/strong> quarter-point interest rate cut<\/strong> the previous week, with the pound sterling<\/strong> further pressured by speculation over additional tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abTomorrow could see a renewed focus on the Bank of England\u2019s easing cycle<\/strong>,\u00bb ING analysts added. \u00abFormer hawk, now possibly dove, Catherine Mann<\/strong> is set to give a speech on the UK outlook<\/strong>. Understanding why she voted for a 50-basis-point rate cut<\/strong> last week could provide insight into whether others might follow suit.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yen Retreats Considerably<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Asia, the USD\/JPY pair<\/strong> surged 0.6% to 152.37<\/strong>, marking a strong rebound from its lowest level since early December<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The yen had strengthened considerably the previous week, as strong wage data<\/strong> and hawkish comments from the Bank of Japan (BoJ)<\/strong> led traders to expect further interest rate hikes<\/strong> in the coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bank of Japan<\/strong> raised rates by 25 basis points in January<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, weaker-than-expected current account data<\/strong>, which showed a sharp decline in Japan\u2019s current account surplus<\/strong>, dampened the yen\u2019s momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, USD\/CNY rose 0.3% to 7.3074<\/strong>, weighed down by tariff concerns<\/strong> and weaker-than-expected inflation data<\/strong> released on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data showed that consumer price inflation (CPI)<\/strong> grew less than expected, while the producer price index (PPI)<\/strong> continued to decline, underscoring China\u2019s fragile economic recovery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
